Applied lidocaine to wing site, closed proximal wound with horizontal mattress sutures and the more distal wound with simple continuous sutures. Had to clean scabbing off tendon that was exposure. Mild trauma to plantar aspect of both feet where skin is lifting, no deep wounds. Drew blood from the medial metatarsal vein. Some birds are able to compensate for loss of patagial tendon with other tendons but concerned bird may have loss too much patagium and both wings are affected. P: Change bandages in 2d and reassess condition of wings, use of wings.

Kicked and struggled when grabbed O: Plucked around wounded areas on both patagiums, covered with duogel, telfa and tegaderm. Placed fabric wrap on both wings. ------------- PHYSICAL EXAM FINDINGS ---------------- Mentation: BAR Temp (F): 102.4 Dehydration (%): 5 Heart rate: 220 Resp rate: 24 Neurologic: WNL Head/mouth/beak: Small amount of blood on beak, likely from wounds on wings or food blood Ears: Old yellow bruising AS>AD Eyes: WNL - some old retinal scarring OU but very visual Wings: Bilateral soft tissue wounds, missing patagial tendons, skin on patagiums slightly edematous and tearing easily. Right wing tendon and bone exposure near humerus and small wounds on metacarpals. Left wing just tendon missing with a wound along cranial edge. Legs: WNL Feet: Small wounds likely from Body: WNL Feather condition: Missing patagium feathers - plucked Ectoparasites: Flat flies, lice Radiographic findings: Full belly - likely had food last night. Missing patagiums both wings and soft tissue trauma but no skeletal issues Initial treatment: 0.27cc Meloxicam PO, 0.09cc Gabapentin PO, 0.68cc TMS PO, 25cc LRS SQ in right inguinal area A: Adult barred owl trapped in barbed wire, concerned that finder likely cut tendons to get bird out of wire as both tendons seem to be severed fairly cleanly. Right wing a little worse off than left and will need to monitor tissue die off before knowing prognosis for release. New studies in India showing that birds with patagial tendon injuries are being able to fly if they have enough patagium tissue leftover. P: Rx TMS, Gabapentin, Meloxicam, fluids. Change wraps and bandages daily - clean and apply duogel, cover with telfa and tegaderm. SF in PM; start HF if DNE 12/4 AM. Collect blood, fecal, IOPs.
